HowTo: Renovate a Lawn in Lancaster, PA

Step 1: Assess Your Lawn & Choose a Method

Before you start, take a good look at your lawn. Does it just have some thin spots? Or has it been completely taken over by weeds or invasive grasses while also being rough and difficult to mow?

  • To spruce up a thin lawn, you can give it new life with a single pass of our Ride On Aerator with a Seedbox, a simple way to aerate and seed your lawn in one go. This machine combines aerating and seeding into one efficient step. There’s no easier way to give your lawn a face lift.
  • For a full lawn renovation, you’ll need to start by killing off the old growth and preparing a new seedbed.

Step 2: Eliminate Old Growth (If Needed)

Towable sprayer attached to a utility vehicle applying Round Up for complete lawn renovation.

If your lawn has been taken over by weeds or unwanted grass or it’s too rough, the first step is to kill off all the old grass.

  • Spray the entire area with a non-selective herbicide like Round Up to prepare the ground for fall overseeding or lawn replacement. Check out our rental options for self-propelled and towable sprayers.
  • If you plan to till the soil, one application should be enough. If you want to seed directly into the old turf without tilling, you may need to wait two weeks and spray it again to ensure everything is dead.

Step 3: Prepare the Seedbed

Land grading with a tiller attachment on a skid loader before smoothing with a Harley Rake to prepare soil for a new lawn.

A well-prepared seedbed is the key to successful germination.

  • If you’re doing a full renovation and need to level or grade your yard, you’ll want to start by tilling it up. Rent one of our tillers for a tractor or skid loader to get the old turf worked into the topsoil.
  • Once the organic matter is incorporated, use a Harley Rake or Soil Preparator to get the area smooth and to remove the stones and debris. This step will give you that smooth, easy-to-mow lawn for years to come.

Step 4: Time to Seed!

Now you’re ready to get the seed down. Buck Rentals has different blends of premium grass seed and we will help you choose the right one for your application.

  • For an existing lawn, our Ride On Aerator with a Seedbox will aerate and sprinkle seed for you in one easy pass.
  • For a full renovation, you can broadcast the seed with a seed spinner or better yet you can get it drilled into the soil by using a walkbehind or tractor overseeder or slit seeder.
  • This is also a great time to spread some lime and fertilizer to give your new lawn an extra boost. Check out our soil amendments along with our rental spreaders to help you apply them evenly and quickly.

Step 5: Protect the Seed

Once your seed is in place, you need to protect it from erosion and help it retain moisture.

  • A thin coating of mushroom soil adds organic matter, while also retaining moisture for better germination.
  • Straw bales can be spread on large areas with our straw blower
  • For slopes, we recommend putting down straw matting to prevent erosion of the soil and to keep the seed from moving.

Step 6: Water for Success

Consistent moisture is the most critical factor for a successful lawn. The new seedlings need to be kept moist until they are established. If the rain doesn’t come, we can help.

  • We sell sprinklers and garden hoses and can also rent you a sprinkler system with automatic timers so your lawn can stay moist and keep growing.
